Aside from the Tiber, there is another main body of water associated with the Sabines: the Fiume Velino, or Velino River, which runs through the narrow, craggy Valle del Velino. It reaches Castel Sant’Angelo after crossing the Piana di San Vittorino and the fertile Piana Reatina flatlands, with a sinuous course up until the Cascata delle Marmore, an ancient public works project created to drain the Conca Reatina marsh, and over which the river’s water joins with those of the underlying Nera River. The Velino receives tributary waters from many smaller rivers and streams, as well as the outlet of the Lago di Piediluco, the present-day residue of the ancient lake called Lacus Velinus.
The Salto, Turano and Peschiera rivers, as well as the Canale di Santa Susanna, are its main tributaries; because of the considerable amount of water that runs through it, it’s an important fishing resource. Its abundance of trout makes it an indispensable locale for avid fishermen.
Excursions along the Velino
The WWF has created a trail for hikers that runs along its left bank, beginning at a bend in the river across from the ancient Roman bridge. Hiking this trail, visitors can discover the river’s flora and fauna, enjoying a unique panorama and fascinating view of the city, walking by some of its most historic palazzos and the garden district.
It passes the apse of the Chiesa di San Francesco, followed by the Palazzo Potenziani and the Chiesa di Santa Caterina. Near the bridge called Ponte Cavallotti visitors can enjoy a view of where the medieval walls, which still surround the historic city centre, meet the river. The itinerary continues on to Porta d’Arce where, in front of the medieval defensive walls, the road to Colle San Mauro begins, bringing hikers to a convent founded in 1578 by Capuchin monks. From the hilltop (as 503 metres above sea level) the entire city greets the visitor’s gaze in a panorama of rare beauty. The vegetation surrounding the convent is noteworthy, and includes centuries-old holm oaks, monumental spruces and firs, and the rare Syrian juniper. Atop the summit, just past the convent, is a sumptuous villa formerly owned by the Potenziani Princes.
